Exhibition Catalogue This survey exhibition and publication of modern American wood turning, a joint venture of the Wood Turning Center and the Yale University Art Gallery, is testimony to the belief that lathe art has come of age. As this book shows, pictures of lathe-turned objects are worth a thousand words. The curatorial team's early discussions and selections were informed by the Wood Turning Center's library and achives. Reviewing 500 turned objects, selceted from over 20,000 slides, hundreds of artists' files, and original historical documents, led to many lively discussions. Artists' responses to the team's questionaire contributed tremendous information and insights. Trips to study institutional and private collections added unique perspecitve to the search for information and representative objects for the exhibition. This catalogue contains full color images of the objects from the exhibit; descriptions of the artists work, processes, and inspirations; essays on the history of turning, focused on the last 100 years; and technical descriptions of working with wood as a material.
