The Muppets Take Manhattan is a captivating musical that centers around Kermit, Fozzie, and the rest of the cast of Kermit's musical "Manhattan Melodies" as they embark on a journey to Broadway. After graduating from college, they plan to turn their small play into a big hit. However, their dreams are met with rejection as no one in town is willing to produce their show. Despite this setback, Kermit remains determined and must muster all his belief for the show to go on. Directed by Frank Oz, this comedy offers delightful family entertainment. The story follows Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Gonzo, Scooter, and the other Muppets as they celebrate their imminent graduation by performing Kermit's original musical for their senior variety show. They then decide to take the production to Broadway. However, their plans are met with various obstacles. They find themselves living in bus station lockers and frequenting a local restaurant while waiting for their big break. Eventually, hope dwindles, and everyone goes their separate ways, leaving Kermit alone in New York City. Yet, with renewed determination, Kermit devises a three-step plan to bring his play to the Broadway stage. The question arises: will it succeed? And even if they do make it to Broadway, will it be too late to reunite all the Muppets? The Muppets Take Manhattan is filled with delightful songs, lively dances, and superb puppetry. The film captures the essence of New York City with its abundant scenic views. Notably, the movie features guest appearances by renowned personalities such as Liza Minnelli, Joan Rivers, Dabney Coleman, and Vincent Sardi. Their cameos are seamlessly woven into the plot, enhancing the overall experience. Directed by the talented Frank Oz, this 1984 production has rightfully earned its status as a classic Muppet Movie. The 2011 Blu-ray release offers improved picture quality compared to the previous DVD version. Of noteworthy mention is the inclusion of an interview with Jim Henson, which was originally divided into 14 separate menu segments. Now, viewers have the option to watch the interview in smaller segments or as one continuous feature, albeit with some minor choppiness. Suitable for ages 5 and older, this film guarantees enjoyable entertainment for the whole family. – Tami Horiuchi
