Its history is divided into four epochs: first, ancient Lika, when it was part of the Roman Empire; second, Slav-Croatian Lika, before the Ottoman arrival, when it became part of the European feudal system; third, the Turkish wars, during which the Habsburgs and their army controlled Lika; and fourth, from the 19th century to the present, when the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, later Yugoslavia, replaced Austrian rule in Lika. The author’s family hails from the Lika region in western Croatia. This is the only known history of Lika available in English.
