The Diary of Anne Frank (DVD)
George Stevens (Giant) directed this 1959 film version of the hit play inspired by the writings of Anne Frank, the Jewish girl from Amsterdam who hid in an attic with her family and others during the Nazi occupation. Millie Perkins plays Anne as something of a wide-eyed enigma andlooking backperhaps a bit too old for the role, but shes surrounded by an exceptional cast: Joseph Schildkraut as Annes patient father, Ed Wynn as the cranky dentist who moves into her room, and Shelley Winters as the boisterous Mrs. Van Daan. Stevens weaves the overlapping dramas of the confined characters into the backdrop for Annes growth into a young woman, ready for life and love, just as the dream is cut short. Beautifully captured by cinematographer William C. Mellor and adapted by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett from their own stage production.
