According to McPherson, the contention revolves around the notion that the Navajo nation, instead of being portrayed as a downtrodden group of prisoners who were militarily defeated in the 1860s and reliant on the U.S. government for protection and guidance in the 1870s and 80s, actively engaged in the defense and expansion of their homelands. This was accomplished through an aggressive defensive policy that relied on individual action and adapted to changing circumstances, rather than through warfare or concerted efforts. Many Navajos managed to evade capture and avoid the arduous Long Walk to Bosque Redondo by seeking refuge in the northern and western hinterlands, effectively pushing out their frontier. The book specifically focuses on the events and activities that took place in the northern frontier of the Navajo borderlands, where between 1860 and 1900, the Navajos successfully acquired a significant portion of land that remains part of their reservation to this day. This expansion occurred during a time when the majority of Native Americans were losing their lands.
