Each scale is presented with all of its modes and their associated harmonized chord signatures, first with a default fingering pattern and then as a template allowing for custom fingerings that the reader may prefer. Each fingering pattern is also repeated higher up the fretboard. Each mode uses a representation of a twenty-four-fret guitar neck oriented with the nut at the left and string six at the bottom. There is one fretboard representation for each mode of the scale. The default fingering is a vertical box pattern rooted on string six. Generally, this will be a three-note-per-string pattern for six-, seven- and eight-note scales, and a two-note-per-string pattern for five-note scales. (The Blues scale is handled as a special case, because it is not typically fingered with an equal number of notes per string). To better facilitate custom fingering patterns, there is an interval map at the top of each page. This map is composed (for simplicity's sake) entirely of singly-flatted intervals. Roots are surrounded by a heavy circle. The map is a twelve-fret repeating pattern and should be understood to cycle back onto itself to the left and right. This map is best used with the scale template patterns, but may also be used to locate chord intervals after manual translation of the given chord-interval signature into an equivalent signature using only singly-flatted intervals. While all Mode I patterns are rooted on the note ``A'', they can be considered moveable patterns that apply to any root by shifting them up or down the fretboard. For both default and custom-template representations, surrounding notes in the scale or mode are depicted as open circles. In the default patterns, notes in the box are represented as filled black circles. In the templates, only roots are filled in, allowing the reader to manually fill in a preferred fingering using the open circles. At the top of each mode is its interval signature relative to a major scale at that root. Here each interval is either sharpened or flattened as an offset to the corresponding interval in a major scale at that root. Intervals are presented in major-scale ascending order regardless of the number of notes in the scale. This approach occasionally results in signatures having triple and quadruple sharpenings or flattenings of a particular interval. To alleviate this, and to better facilitate use of the interval map at the top of each page (which is composed only of singly-flatted intervals), this signature is followed by a translation of the signature into its equivalent using only singly-flatted intervals. Finally, the corresponding extended chord signature, harmonized in thirds, is presented as note-plus-interval signature. The notes are determined relative to the note ``A'' which is the root of Mode I. Product Description This book takes 73 named scales and breaks each one down into its modes, presenting a guitar fretboard pattern for each mode. Includes an interval map and harmonized extended chord signature for each mode. Presents each set of modes first with a default fingering pattern, then again on the facing page with a template for custom fingerings. 301 pages.
