Grease (Rockin' Rydell Edition)
*New/Sealed*
In 2002, Paramount organized a grand release party to celebrate the elease of Grease, where the original cast and crew were brought together for a night of nostalgia and singing. The Rockin' Rydell Edition of the DVD includes footage from this memorable event as its main special feature. It is truly remarkable to watch Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta performing a duet of "You're The One That I Want" accompanied by dance moves and a live band. The inclusion of the other T-Birds and Pink Ladies for the performance of "Summer Nights" adds to the magic, even though some of them struggled to recall the lyrics. Encased in a black leather T-Bird jacket, this new edition also offers a Rydell sing-along feature, allowing viewers to select their favorite numbers and engage in karaoke. Additionally, it provides insights on various aspects such as the cars of Grease and the choreography involved. Unfortunately, it is highlighted that Jeff Conaway, who played Danny on Broadway, was assigned the role of Kenickie instead, with Kenickie's "Greased Lightening" number being given to Travolta's Danny in the film, leaving Conaway at a disadvantage. Interviews with Newton-John and Travolta on the evening of the movie's 1978 premiere are also included, before Newton-John achieved great success with "Physical" and "Xanadu," and Travolta became a mega-movie star with his own plane. However, the audio commentary by director Randal Kleiser and choreographer Patricia Birch, although generally uneventful, does contain two interesting pieces of information: the participation of actor Michael Biehn (The Terminator) as a jock and director Andy Tennant (Hitch) as a dancer. Birch also mentions that the original hand jive had a more provocative title. Overall, the Rockin' Rydell edition is definitely a worthwhile investment, at least until Travolta dons a leather jacket for the 50th anniversary reunion. - Ellen A.
