The political parties in present-day Germany, namely the social democrats and the communists, are now deeply divided. The social democrats are democratic and reformist, while the communists are totalitarian and socialist-revolutionary. Despite their current animosity in the Cold War, both parties have a common origin in the Social Democratic Party of Imperial Germany. The process by which they diverged and the dissolution of the old party are topics explored in Carl Schorske's study. Moreover, it delves into how the prewar party laid the foundation for the disintegration of the labor movement during World War I and the subsequent spread of Leninism in Germany.
