Luc Besson, known for hits like The Transporter series, Taken, and District B-13, has a knack for turning B-movie formulasfemme fatales, parkour, Gaultier flair, and plenty of gunsinto box office gold. Colombiana, his team-up with director Olivier Megaton (Transporter 3), doesnt break much new ground, but Zoe Saldanas intense performance and a touch of surrealism keep things moving at a brisk pace. Originally conceived as a sequel to The Professional, the film follows a stunning South American assassin on a mission to take down the killers of her parents. As she closes in on her drug lord target, those closest to her (including Michael Vartan and a scene-stealing Cliff Curtis) find themselves in danger. Explosions abound. Megaton delivers action with the signature rapid cuts and blue-filter style of the Besson brand, but Saldana elevates it with a mix of physicality and soulful depth. Whether crawling through vents in a sleek catsuit or turning a toothbrush into a deadly weapon, she carries a gravitas that goes beyond the call of duty. Some assassination scenes even channel the quirky, logic-defying style of Mario Bavas Danger: Diabolik. While the story and side characters dont always click, Colombianas unique touches lift it above a standard guilty pleasurebecause when your villain has a shark tank for a dance floor, realism can take the night off.
