The 2004 *Appleseed* film is a reimagining of the earlier video adaptation of Masamune Shirows manga (*Ghost in the Shell*). Set in 2131, most of humanity has retreated to the gleaming city of Olympus after a catastrophic war. When the striking Deunan Knute arrives, she reunites with her old comrade Briareosnow a cyborgand meets the graceful android Hitomi. The fate of Hitomi, Olympus, and all humanity hinges on the lost Appleseed technology, developed in part by Deunans mother. The story unfolds through a familiar series of chases, mecha battles, and showdowns, leading to a predictable conclusion. While the original 1988 *Appleseed* felt like a summation of animes past and *Akira* pointed toward its future, this version comes across as a blend of *Ghost in the Shell*, *Akira*, *Jin-Roh*, *Evangelion*, and other, more dynamic works. Earths last city, Olympus, rose from the ruins of a global war with the help of Bioroidsartificial clones who make up half its population.
